Why Salzburg?
Salzburg, City of culture
Salzburg is unique - in every regard. Anyone who has ever immersed themselves in the magic of the world-famous City of Mozart can never escape it again. The harmonious interplay of landscape and architecture, art and culture, as well as traditional and modern, all within a surprisingly small area, merely adds to the special charm of this place.
Salzburg is the city where W. A. Mozart was born and the shooting location for "The Sound of Music". The narrow lanes and broad squares of this baroque city have taken their deserved place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The internationally acclaimed Salzburg Festival, the magnificent panorama and the countless temptations of Christmastime make Salzburg a complete artwork in its own right, and one that is quite beyond compare.
WHATS ON
What's on in Salzburg
Mozart Week
Under the leitmotif “Lux Æterna”, the anniversary program from 22 January to 1 February 2026 invites you to a diverse cultural festival: operas and concerts, puppet theater with live music, cinema evenings with rarely shown Mozart films, family concerts, performances - and even a pub quiz are on the program. The glittering highlight is the new production of “The Magic Flute” by artistic director Rolando Villazón.
What I like about it
Great conductors, renowned orchestras and celebrated soloists have shaped the festival's profile for decades. The focus is always on Mozart's work - pure, unadulterated and with the ambition to rediscover it again and again.
Salzburg Easter Festival
12-21 April 2025 - The Salzburg Easter Festival was founded in 1967 by Herbert von Karajan. The main focus is on opera. The supporting programme is made up of numerous concerts.
What I like about it
Under the title "Wounds and Miracles", the 2025 Salzburg Easter Festival offers a varied programme with three top-class orchestras: the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Mozarteum Orchestra. A new production of Modest Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina" is at the heart of the festival. Three orchestral concerts and two choral concerts complete the programme. The Dance and Electro programme, created in 2023, will also be continued.
Hohensalzburg Fortress
Hohensalzburg Fortress is enthroned on the Festungsberg, high above the rooftops of the Baroque historical district. The biggest fully preserved castle in Central Europe, this emblem of Salzburg, offers a 360-degree view of the city and its surroundings.
What I like about it
A truly special experience the panorama tour, which leads from the salt magazine via the dungeon to the viewing platform of the Reckturm [tower], where there is probably the most beautiful view in the city. Afterwards, the tour leads through the battlements to the famous Salzburg Bull.
